St John’s Wood Intro
John’s Wood is a suburb, part of the London Borough of Westminster. It is located north-west of Regent’s Park. Initially the land this area occupies was property to St John of Jerusalem’s Order of the Hospital, and from here the origin of the name, but then in 1732 the land was purchased by Henry Samuel Eyre, a man who selling wine for a profit.
Despite all its good qualities, the area did not develop as fast as other parts of London, the bad roads situation and its low-key profile did not attract much attention to it. The Eyre family finally decided to build new roads and rebuild the old ones thus making the land more accessible.
During the 18th century roads and constructions came about. The housing estates were of high construction standards and most of the new inhabitants were merchants and bankers. John’s Wood keeps developing to this day with little history of what used to be.
